Thinking Ahead
With vacation season swiftly approaching, one thing a lot of people worry about is their diets. For one reason or another, healthy eating is a big deal before people head out. Once the vacation starts, though, it often gets pushed to the side. Heart-healthy dining doesn’t have to be difficult when you’re getting some R-and-R away from home.
The Beach has Health Benefits!
One of the most popular places to go for a summer getaway is the beach. Eating out near the seaside usually means there’s a great assortment of fish to pick from, so don’t worry about running out of healthy seafood options. This isn’t just true for your warm, sunny beaches. New England and the Northwest can both have plenty of affordable seafood to pick from.
There’s Plenty of Options
If you’re traveling inland, fish may be a little pricier or harder to come by. If that’s the case, remember to check out the chicken and pork options before you turn to that juicy ribeye that’s calling out to you. Not only are these dishes usually a bit easier on your pocketbook, but better on your heart, too. You always have to exercise moderation, though, because servings are usually very large. Another thing to consider, watch for any sauces, spice rubs, and dips. These can be very fatty, salty, or both. As for their alternatives to these sort of toppings. If they don’t have any lighter choices, use your own ideas. After all, everyone loves a chicken breast smothered in good barbecue sauce. Most people, however, don’t realize that lemon juice and coarse-ground pepper can give it just as much zing!
Be the Smart Tourist
So, before you head off to catch that plane, boat, train, or whatever it is you’re leaving on, think ahead to what you might eat. When you get to your destination, ask someone about dining options. If you’re lucky, there may actually be a health-oriented restaurant near you. Your hotel should have plenty of information about dining locations in your area. If you’re staying with friends or family, ask them if there’s a heart-friendly place to eat nearby. If not, you just have to hold your own, be smart, and have fun.
